Name: Gail V.
Library: Bruton Memorial Library
Comments from the Committee of Quality Assurance: Gale did a very complete reference interview with the student. After determining where the student was, she was able to demonstrate the Literature Resource Center through co-browse since she was part of the system. She explained how to use the resource and stayed with the student to make sure that the question was answered. Good teaching and good follow-up.

I have to write a paper comparing 2 books that are written by 3rd world women writers discussing the ways women writers subvert or negotiate limited and limiting cultural scripts prescribed for the female self....that type of thing. Im looking for 2 sources that can help me, but i have no idea where to look... |
| customer |
the comparison wll probably be with Red Azalea by anchee min and a small place by jamaica kincaid if that helps |
| Gale V |

| Gale V |
Go ahead and type in one of your authors and let's see what it pulls up. |
| Gale V |
Ok, great, now see the headings listed in blue under your authors search term. You can click on the headings for literary criticism and look at the articles. |
| Gale V |
I won't select the book reviews, but there are several other good articles. Do you think this will be sufficient? |

Hello. Welcome to Ask a Librarian! Please wait a moment while I read your question... |

[patron has not entered a question] |
| Charles |
Hi customer. What do you mean by movie database? |
| customer |
i know that the library has movies that you can take home |
| customer |
i just wanted to know if i could search them online |
| Charles |
Yes, the movies the library owns will be in our online library catalog. Have you been to our homepage before? |
| customer |
yes i have |
| Charles |
Have you been to the catalog? |
| customer |
yes, i have been able to search for books |
| Charles |
Okay, you can use the same catalog to search for any materials we have on VHS and DVD. |
| Charles |
Is there a particular movie you're looking for? |
| customer |
brokendown palace and the color purple |
| Charles |
Are you seeing the catalog on your screen? |
| customer |
yes |
| customer |
it's nice to see how our libraries are keeping up with technology |
| Charles |
How do you mean? |
| customer |
i have one more question |
| customer |
(As far as getting DVDs into the library) my question is, when the format says tape, is it really a cassette tape or could it be a cd |
| Charles |
It looks like we have the color purple, but none available at the moment. you could place a hold on it, and you'll be contacted when one becomes available. |
| Charles |
It would say CD if it was one. Is this for music? |
| customer |
and what does it mean to have something on "My List?" |
| customer |
it was a book that i saw |
| customer |
it said tape |
| Charles |
that probably means it was an audio book, and the format was a cassette tape. |
| Charles |
It doesn't look like we have brokendown palace. |
| customer |
i see an option when i finish serarching my selection that says "Add to my List" what does that mean? |
| Charles |
My List is a feature for when you are logged in and using our online catalog. You can place an item on My List and it will just keep track of it so you can continue searching but later go back to that item and do what you will with it, such as place a hold, take down the call #, etc. |
| customer |
ok...you have been very helpful |
| Charles |
You're welcome. Do you need assistance placing a hold? |
| customer |
No thank you. I have that part down pact. |
| Charles |
All right. Have a good day. |

Honorable Mention Brief Chats
Charlotte S.
Comments from the Committee of Quality Assurance: Fast but good- Even though Charlotte was unfamiliar with the R’s home library’ website, she was able to show R the information about what her barcode number was so that she was able to log on and renew her books. R just needed a little guidance and Charlotte was able to quickly get her where she needed to be.
Name: Clayton Duhl
Comments from the Committee of Quality Assurance: Clayton completed an interview with the patron and was able to find the Web site to answer the question. He then opened up the site in another window since it was loading slowly. Not only did he answer the question but he had good followup and suggestions for the patron.
