Brief Exemplary Chat
Judi Tidwell, Broward College
Judi doesn't have access to this customer's databases, but she doesn't let this deter her from helping. Judi uses her own library resources to guide the customer on the other site. This works very well in this chat and Judi is able to guide the customer to very useful information.

[11:04:10] Judi T : Right
[11:04:39] Judi T : Okay, I am a librarian with Broward College so it will take me a minute to see what UCF has to offer

[11:05:07] Judi T : My pleasure.
[11:05:30] Judi T : I went to the library site and found databases listed by subject
[11:05:34] Judi T : Did you find that too?
[11:06:07] Judi T : It is under Database called Database locator
[11:06:10] Patron: yeah, i didn't know whether to go into medicine, or college of medicine or health science
[11:06:22] Judi T : Okay.
[11:06:31] Patron: oh okay
[11:06:38] Patron: i found the other one you were talking about.
[11:06:52] Judi T : I think with your subject you might want to try with a general science
[11:07:04] Judi T : Are you trying to get a description on the syndrome?
[11:07:09] Judi T : Or current research?
[11:08:07] Patron: well i have to write a paper about it so i need information about it, for example, the red flags, impact on learning and communication. those types of things.
[11:09:02] Judi T : Wow. Okay. I see you have CINAHL available also Science Direct
[11:09:07] Judi T : Both should have something
[11:09:35] Judi T : I am going to check using my college because I don't have access with yours - but they are the same databases
[11:09:45] Patron: okay.
[11:09:52] Judi T : Give me a minute please so I can confirm that your topic is there
[11:11:06] Patron: alrighty.
[11:11:10] Judi T : CINAL only had one article - but it is 5 pdf pages worth - might be useful as a secondary source
[11:11:22] Patron: alright.
[11:13:04] Judi T : Okay - I think we found a winner!
[11:13:29] Judi T : Medline via Ebsco has 71 articles
[11:13:36] Patron: ah okay
[11:13:40] Judi T : Including diagnosis and complications
[11:13:52] Judi T : If you do a database search by title
[11:13:59] Judi T : And choose "M"
[11:14:02] Patron: for medline and CINAL?
[11:14:29] Judi T : Just "M" for Medline
[11:14:38] Judi T : I think you should start there
[11:14:59] Judi T : But it is the second Medline on your list - the one with Ebsco
[11:15:20] Judi T : Not CSA
[11:15:23] Patron: alright i found it! thank you very much. if i need anymore help i'll be sure to log on again.

[08:23:47] You have been connected to Diana M .
[08:23:50] Diana M : Hello and thank you for waiting. I'm a reference librarian at Santa Fe College and will be assisting you today. Please wait a moment while I read your question.
[08:25:37] Diana M : What type of sources in particular are you looking for?
[08:25:45] Diana M : Journal articles, books, websites...?
[08:27:04] Patron: I live in St. Petersburg so I would like to find a book, also any articles by web or websites would be very helpful. I can't seem to find a sound article on my web searches I have already done.
[08:28:12] Diana M : Okay, I've found a few promising articles in a database called Criminal Justice Periodicals.
[08:28:20] Diana M : Let me walk you through how to access it.
[08:28:25] Diana M : Do you know how to get to the databases?
[08:28:41] Patron: No I don't
[08:29:04] Diana M : Do you know how to get to the St. Petersburg College Library website?
[08:29:24] Patron: Yes
[08:29:43] Diana M : Ok, you're going to want to click the Resources link
[08:30:10] Patron: Ok
[08:30:44] Diana M : Then click the Log Into Databases link
[08:31:19] Patron: Writing down your instruction
[08:31:19] Diana M : Your Borrower ID should be your student ID number, and your PIN should be the last four of your SSN
[08:31:26] Diana M : No problem
[08:31:44] Patron: got it
[08:31:47] Diana M : You can also have this transcript e-mailed or printed out after we finish.
[08:31:56] Diana M : So you're all logged in?
[08:32:09] Patron: right
[08:32:37] Diana M : OK, click the plus sign next to the Social Sciences link
[08:32:47] Patron: Ok
[08:32:49] Diana M : That will show you all the Social Sciences databases, which includes criminology
[08:33:07] Patron: of
[08:33:11] Patron: OK
[08:33:29] Patron: and the articles you see are there?
[08:33:41] Diana M : I went to the Criminal Justice database, so click there.
[08:33:57] Patron: OK
[08:34:10] Diana M : So now you should be at a search screen, yes?
[08:34:17] Patron: Yes
[08:34:29] Diana M : Ok, here's what I typed in the box:
[08:34:31] Diana M : deception AND (law enforcement OR police) AND confession
[08:34:39] Diana M : this is just a start
[08:35:13] Diana M : When you search that, you get 11 articles
[08:35:15] Patron: that should bring many
[08:35:26] Patron: Thank you so much
[08:35:27] Diana M : But notice that only 4 of them are full-text (which means you can only read 4 of them)
[08:35:42] Diana M : Now, the articles that you CAN'T read, you have some options for.
[08:35:59] Diana M : If you have the time to wait, you can request that your library obtain a copy for you through Interlibrary loan.
[08:36:03] Diana M : This can take a few weeks sometimes.
[08:36:22] Diana M : Otherwise, you can look at the abstract (summary) and come up with another word besides 'deception' and use that instead.
[08:36:30] Diana M : So, for instance, one says 'trickery'
[08:36:42] Diana M : so you could search trickery AND (law enforcement OR police) AND confession
[08:36:54] Diana M : or possibly false documents AND (law enforcement OR police) AND confession
[08:36:59] Patron: I see
[08:37:44] Diana M : You can also look in other social science databases too, since they have different articles.
[08:38:38] Patron: So I can request some of the other 11 articles from St. Petersburg College and pick them up?
[08:39:01] Diana M : Yes. But remember it can take a few weeks.
[08:39:33] Diana M : Here's the page for that: http://www.spjc.cc.fl.us/central/libonline/services/ill.htm
[08:39:52] Patron: No that won't work this Professor is only giving us a week to complete the paper. I think you have give me alot of avenues to find what I need.
[08:40:27] Diana M : Great. Play around with your keywords, and then try some other databases too.
[08:40:32] Patron: I am only allowed to use five sources on this very controlled paper.
[08:40:43] Diana M : Academic Search Complete might be another good database to use.
[08:41:06] Diana M : You could also use 'interrogation' instead of 'confession' to broaden it a little.
[08:42:16] Patron: You know I really appreciate you helping me today, I believe you just saved me hours of searching ineffectively for a needle in the haystack thanks alot
[08:42:31] Diana M : I'm glad to hear it. Come on back if you're having problems.
[08:42:39] Diana M : And good luck writing it!
[08:42:53] Patron: Have a great day thanks
[08:43:26] Diana M : Bye.
