Mandy: Hello There. Are you looking to buy a home in the Hillsborough County area?
Patron: yes maam
Mandy: Okay. Give me a minute and I see if I can find some information for you.
Patron: thank you
Mandy: Here is the Hillsborough County Affordable Housing webpage:
Mandy: http://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/affordablehousingoffice/
Mandy: They have information about finding low cost homes and also information for First Time Home Buyers
Patron: so then this is a good place to start...are there any books you would recommend
Mandy: Most libraries will have those dummies or complete idiot series of books (not calling you one just the title of the series = ) ) and they have ones that cover buying a home
Mandy: I would start there and also look here at the property appraisor's website
Mandy: http://www.hcpafl.org/www/index.shtml
Mandy: This is mainly about taxes but you can also research any home you are looking to buy.
Patron: really because i tried finding a book like that threw the website and it didn't pull up one
Mandy: Let's go to their website and see if we can find one
Patron: thank you for your help im glad you're so knowledgible
Mandy: Your welcome.
Mandy: I'm going to try and access their catalog on my own and see if I can get it to work cause it doesn't seem to want to work here.
Patron: ok thank you
Mandy: http://ipac.hcplc.org/
Mandy: That should take you to the link that lists the book "Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying and Selling a Home"
Patron: thats perfect thank you for all your help
Mandy: Your welcome. The downtown library and most of the branches has it checked in
Mandy: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Mandy: You may also want to check the newspaper for listings on foreclosures.
Patron: No Thank you..i will certainly do that to.

| Duration: | 25 minutes |
| Comments about the session: | Operator did an excellent job of showing the customer how to find online material for teaching multiculturalism. Good reference interview! |
Virginia: Hello. I'm answering from a university library in the Tampa Bay region. Please give me a moment to read your question and I will be right with you.
Patron: ok
Virginia: Hmm. Can you tell me a little more about your research? What do you mean by the _history_ of the genre?
Virginia: like the philosophy behind why the books are written or collected or???
Patron: no just the historical evolution
Virginia: Hmmm. Have you looked into a database like ERIC?
Virginia: Perhaps we should begin there...
Patron: I am writing a paper arguing the significance of multicult childrens lit in library stacks and I need some hisotrical information
Patron: I looked in Ebscohost
Patron: OK
Virginia: let me think about this for a few seconds...I'm wondering if there are some places such as NEA or the American Library Association's Young Adult Literature section that might have a rationale for you.
Virginia: can you see the logon screen for EBSCO in the adjacent frame?
Patron: yes, do i need to login
Virginia: if you can, please logon for us and then we can search together; also, from the list of databases at your college, I would suggest running this same search again in ProQuest too
Virginia: Yes, please. It should be able to let you logon and me see what your page looks like.
Patron: It is not authenticating my passwork
Patron: What subject terms and or boolean operators do you suggest?
Virginia: That will have to be taken care of at your library. I'm sorry but I don't have that access from here.
Virginia: I would be glad to try a few sample searches, but it will take me a few minutes to do on another screen and then report back. Will that be OK?
Patron: Ok
Patron: Thanks
Virginia: Alright. Please be patient.
Virginia: Here's something you might want to read while I search--http://www.ipl.org/div/pf/entry/48493
Patron: ok
Virginia: And, if you want to suggest some specific titles, this site might be useful, as it gives annotations for specific multicultural books--http://www.multiculturalchildrenslit.com/
Virginia: I just went into my library's subscription to EBSCO and used these modules: Academic Search Premier, ERIC, Primary Search, and Teacher Reference Center.
Patron: alright
Virginia: Here's how I searched. 1. switch to Advanced Search function 2. put "children's literature" in as a _subject_ and "multicultural" in the second line as _select a field (optional)"
Virginia: I got 135 articles. It then suggests how to narrow the results by clicking on some subjects on the lefthand side.
Patron: ok
Virginia: such as "social aspects" or "multiculturalism in literature"
Virginia: or "study & teaching
Virginia: "
Virginia: You might also want to reconstruct the same search I just ran and include something else on your third search line, such as maybe "rationale"?
Patron: will do thanks for your help
Virginia: if you give me an email address, I'll send you a few from here...
Virginia: Or, I could just give you some titles of articles instead
Virginia: Some seem pretty close to what you're looking for, such as "Multicultural Children's Literature as an Instrument of Power" from Language Arts Nov2005, vol 83, no2, pp. 128-136
Virginia: I don't think I would be breaking a license because you also have access via your own library, but it is a gray area and I don't want either of us to get in trouble for me sending you the articles in full, so maybe just the citations?
Patron: Patron email
Patron: Thank you so much!!!! citations please!!!!
Virginia: OK, I'll send you the citations. Hold on while I do that and let's make sure you get them...
Patron: alright!
Virginia: do you want ALA or MLA style?
Patron: it doesn't matter.
Virginia: sending in MLA
Patron: thanks
Virginia: OK, I just sent the citations. Let me know if they come through.
Virginia: There should be 13 of them.
Patron: REceived all 13 citations. thank you for your statisfaction of my inquiry!
Patron: "satisfaction"
Virginia: Great! Sounds like an interesting paper. Have fun.
Patron: Ok bye!
