Melissa Mohler, Bartow Public Library

Melissa kept the patron constantly engaged in the chat conversation and it paid off as the patron exclaimed "that works thank you so much saved my life lol" That's a testimonial if I ever heard one.

[14:53:45] Librarian: Welcome to Ask a Librarian, Patron. How may I help you?

[14:54:52] Librarian: One moment while I look for that information...
[14:57:03] Librarian: I am looking through newspaper databases at the moment...thank you for your patience.
[14:57:18] Patron: thank you
[14:59:04] Librarian: You have a very specific date - are you looking for a specific article as well?
[14:59:36] Patron: nope. it just has to be april 22nd 1988 the day i was born from the NY TIMES
[14:59:51] Patron: need access to that entire paper.
[15:00:25] Librarian: Oh, I see. I'm trying to find a service that will not be subscription based. You may have a database through your school library, but I do not have access to that. One moment...
[15:00:50] Patron: if it's free ill subscribe lol
[15:01:14] Librarian: It would definitely not be free! :)
[15:01:22] Librarian: So that's what I'm trying to avoid.
[15:04:20] Librarian: Oh wow, the New York Times articles are free from 1981 to 1987.
[15:04:23] Librarian: Just missed the mark.
[15:04:40] Patron: guess i am being born in 1987
[15:04:50] Librarian: Or wait...that may just be worded strangely...let me check
[15:04:58] Patron: thank you
[15:06:42] Librarian: It was the other way around! Not very logical in their description.
[15:06:49] Librarian: I am going to push you a web page. If it does not open automatically, go ahead and click on the link to open the page.
[15:06:55] The Librarian is sending you to http://query.nytimes.com/search/query?frow=0&n=10&srcht=a&query=&srchst=nyt&submit.x=14&submit.y=6&submit=sub&hdlquery=&bylquery=&daterange=period&mon1=04&day1=22&year1=1988&mon2=04&day2=22&year2=1988.

Detailed Chat

Alicia Ellison, Hillsborough Community College

The customer had homework questions requiring her to determine which of multiple choices were the correct call numbers for given book titles. I pushed web sites that describe the "anatomy of a call number" and LC and Dewey subject headings...plus guided her through a bit of deduction to conclude which were the correct numbers. Also gave a brief "lesson" on which libraries use which system...and managed to communicate with Traci Avet while I had the customer online (thanks, Traci) to answer a question about what would remain on the customer's computer after the session ended. The transaction required prior knowledge of these sites (http://tinyurl.com/yd3h3pb ... http://tinyurl.com/6ep5nb ... http://www.ipl.org/div/aplus/lc_class.htm ) ... plus quick reflexes to keep the customer engaged while getting the procedural answer and pasting it into the session. :-)

I have question on using the claaifications or call numbers of certain books or ref. Its very hard to fiquire i can show you my examples and maybe you can direct me? The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R Covey (1989) A. 158 COV B. BF 637.S8.C68 1989 C. BF 637.S8.C68 2003 D. FB 637.S8.C8 1989
[12:35:36] You have been connected to Librarian.
[12:35:49] Librarian: Hello, welcome to Ask a Librarian. I am Alicia and I will be assisting you today. Please wait a moment while I consider your question...
[12:36:31] Librarian: Sure - why don't you don't you give me some more info about what you need to know.
[12:37:11] Patron: Activity 4.1 - Call Numbers Your session has expired. Please enter your password to re-authenticate for submission. Password: Find the classification or CALL numbers for the following printed items on the Online Catalog. 1. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R Covey (1989) A. 158 COV B. [12:38:00] Patron: r u still there i so need help. I'm on the disability rooster
[12:38:24] Librarian: I'm here - I'm trying to get a web site to you that explains call numbers....
[12:38:55] Librarian: This looks like a school assignment and so I don't want to give you the answer outright but rather give you something that will help you figure it out. Just a moment please.
[12:39:36] The Librarian is sending you to http://www.usg.edu/galileo/skills/unit03/libraries03_04.phtml.
[12:40:01] Patron: hi the link went away! augh I didn't get to run it
[12:40:16] Librarian: Just a sec
[12:40:30] Librarian: http://www.usg.edu/galileo/skills/unit03/libraries03_04.phtml
[12:40:43] Librarian: There it is again
[12:40:48] The Librarian is sending you to http://www.usg.edu/galileo/skills/unit03/libraries03_04.phtml.
[12:41:00] Patron: thanx
[12:41:32] Librarian: One of those 4 possible answers is the correct call # for the book mentioned in the question.
[12:42:28] Librarian: I'm going to send you one other thing that shows the classification subject headings and that will help you further
[12:43:07] Patron: it s seem to find Ref should be B but on the 2 nd question i can't find Ref
[12:43:43] Librarian: I'm sorry I don't know what you mean by Ref -- that title is not a reference book
[12:44:47] Librarian: I'm getting something else for you - just a moment
[12:44:57] Patron: The world book Encyclapedia 2003?
[12:45:43] Librarian: What the question is asking you is...
[12:46:17] Librarian: of the four call numbers listed -- choices A-D -- which one is the one for "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People."
[12:46:40] Patron: so just looking at it c is it?
[12:47:03] Librarian: http://www.usg.edu/galileo/skills/unit03/libraries03_04.phtml
[12:47:23] Patron: c for the 2nd question. the 1rst should be b
[12:47:27] Librarian: sorry - i'm trying to send you something - bear w/ me
[12:47:38] Librarian: http://www.ipl.org/div/aplus/lc_class.htm
[12:47:42] The Librarian is sending you to http://www.ipl.org/div/aplus/lc_class.htm.
[12:47:49] Patron: ok
[12:47:52] Librarian: Look at the subject headings
[12:48:46] Librarian: There's the subject heading denoted by one or two letters....and the other hint is the last 4 numbers, which is the year of publication. Look at the title "Seven Habits" and notice the year of publication.
[12:49:09] Patron: yes i do see
[12:49:15] Librarian: There are 2 possible answers that have that year...however only one of them is right when you look at the subject headings (and if you know anything about the book)
[12:50:48] Librarian: Another hint...when you look at the subject headings that I just sent you...look at the difference between BF and FB
[12:51:13] Librarian: Of course you have to know something about the book to be able to tell which is the correct one.
[12:51:40] Patron: were not really supposed to
[12:52:48] Librarian: Well then....you'll have to use your common sense :-) Does that title sound like Psychology (BF)....or America & Us (FB)?
[12:53:19] Patron: will our session here go away or shall i print to keep the web addresses
[12:54:13] Patron: bf
[12:54:26] Librarian: Yes!
[12:54:34] Librarian: So...which one is the right answer of the 4?
[12:54:43] Patron: yeh!
[12:55:32] Librarian: They figured out a way to make the possible answers a little confusing! But now you know (1) how to read a call number (the first web site I sent you) ....and how the subject headings are listed by letters.
[12:56:06] Patron: BF637.s8.c68 1989?
[12:56:17] Librarian: I would say so!
[12:56:56] Patron: will our session stay on my computer?
[12:57:08] Librarian: The Psychology subject BF was the tip off.....plus the call numbers (usually) end with the publication date...so 1989 helped to narrow the possible choices.
[12:57:45] Librarian: I have to find out - I'm not sure - i know you get a transcript - just a moment.
[12:58:18] Patron: great and the 2nd question i take it i just guess because its: ref for referance and ends in 2003?
[12:58:50] Patron: letter c
[12:59:03] Librarian: Yo uknow...the second question never appeared completely on my end...so I didn't know what you meant by "ref" -- can you send that one again? I can't see the whole thing.
[12:59:15] Patron: ok
[13:00:01] Patron: 2. Reference item - The World Book Encyclopedia (2003) A. AE5.W55 2003 B. REF AE5.W55.0230 C. REF AE5.W55 2003 D. FER AE5.W55 3002
[13:00:13] Librarian: Give me a sec
[13:00:55] Librarian: Yes you are correct!
[13:01:19] Patron: yeh
[13:01:37] Librarian: Great - now give me a sec cause i'm getting an answer about the session staying on the computer
[13:02:12] Librarian: Here's what the administrators tell me: "Everything will remain on her computer, and she can click on the printer icon to print, email, or save the transcript to her computer…."
[13:02:14] Patron: thanx for ypur help. r these the same for all librarys? and other things like audiovisual/
[13:03:18] Librarian: These call numbers are examples of the Library of Congress system, which is mostly used in college/university libraries. Public and K-12 use the Dewey Decimal System, so the call numbers in that look very different. Do you want info on the Dewey Decimal?
[13:04:04] Librarian: Re: audiovisual...all materials - books, AV, etc. that are available for use in the library or to check out...are arranged according to whatever system (Dewey or LOC) that the library uses.
[13:04:33] Patron: ok where is the Dewey?
[13:04:59] Librarian: just a sec
[13:05:46] Librarian: http://www.ipl.org/div/aplus/dewey1.htm
[13:05:53] The Librarian is sending you to http://www.ipl.org/div/aplus/dewey1.htm.
[13:05:56] The Librarian is sending you to http://www.ipl.org/div/aplus/dewey1.htm.
[13:06:11] Librarian: And one more...just a moment
[13:06:36] Patron: thankyou i need to look at my other tasks now. i might write you back later
[13:06:54] Librarian: OK - have a good day!
[13:07:05] Patron: and u

[09:27:10] Librarian: Hello, welcome to Ask a Librarian. I am Christine and I will be assisting you today. Please wait a moment while I consider your question...

[09:27:43] Librarian: Are you on or off campus?
[09:28:13] Patron: off campus.. i've logged in to off campus
[09:29:06] Librarian: First, go to the libraries home page http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/, then click on the green button in the top left hand corner (if you haven't already). This will bring you to a screen that will let you log in to affiliate yourself with UF.

[09:30:41] Patron: ok
[09:31:00] Librarian: You can do this by clicking on the UF Smathers Libraries Link on the page once you have logged in (top left corner).
[09:31:51] Librarian: you can then type the title of the journal in the box on the top right of the screen (under the "find" tab, yellowish box)
[09:32:36] Patron: alright. It brought me to a list first is the ejournal second is just a journal
[09:32:54] Librarian: Once you have searched for the Journal of Adolescent Research, the first entry it should find should be for full text online access.
[09:33:18] Librarian: Once you click on the link, it will take you to a page outlining which databases have access to which years.
[09:33:31] Librarian: Is the year you need included within these years?
[09:34:30] Librarian: If so, click on the link to the appropriate database. If not, then you would want to click on second entry you found to get to the listings for the print version of this journal.
[09:35:05] Patron: i'm going to share my screen with you because there was no list on what i clicked.
[09:35:29] Librarian: ok
[09:37:21] Patron: i clicked on "click here for full text options"
[09:37:44] Patron: it brought me to Journal of adolescent research (0743-5584) More full text options from 03/01/1986 to 10/31/1998 in SAGE Deep Backfile Package 2008 from 1999 to present in Electronic Collections Online WARNING: Some issues may be missing from years of full-text coverage. from 01/01/1999 to present in SAGE Premier 2007

[09:38:19] Librarian: correct, is the year that you need included in any of the date ranges above?
[09:39:04] Patron: yes, i would like the most recent.. .i picked Vol. 24 No. 6, 2009
[09:39:16] Librarian: Ok, did you find what you needed when you clicked that link?
[09:40:18] Patron: 5. Feminist Identity Among Latina Adolescents I'd like to read the full text of this article but it only shows me a condensed version.. this is where i got stuck when i was doing it before.
[09:40:54] Patron: the abstract
[09:41:06] Librarian: Ok, did you click on the PDF link or the Abstract link?
[09:41:16] Librarian: Ok, click on the PDF link
[09:41:31] Patron: i wasn't given the choice
[09:41:32] Librarian: An abstract is just a summary of the paper.
[09:42:15] Librarian: did it give you a list of articles for November 2009, Volume 24, No. 6?
[09:42:33] Librarian: And yours was 5th listed?
[09:42:39] Patron: yes
[09:43:06] Librarian: there are four links next to it, Abstract, PDF, References, and Request Permission
[09:43:36] Librarian: do you see these?
[09:43:37] Patron: on mine, the title is the only link
[09:44:42] Librarian: ok, hmm, did you share your screen with me?
[09:45:01] Patron: i did.. should i do it again?
[09:45:19] Librarian: yes, it only came up for about 4 seconds and then it went down again.
[09:46:47] Librarian: Just to make sure, you started off by logging in with your gatorlink account, or library number first, right (at the very beginning, before searching for the title).
[09:47:07] Patron: yes ma'am
[09:47:15] Librarian: hmm, ok
[09:47:52] Librarian: did you initiate the screen sharing, it is not showing on my end yet
[09:48:19] Patron: i'll turn it back on, sorry.
[09:48:57] Patron: let me know when it shows up and i'll bring you to the page
[09:49:10] Librarian: ok, I am going to navigate for you for a short bit to see if I can figure it out, let me know if you have any questions.
[09:49:38] Patron: alright
[09:52:53] Librarian: Is that what you needed. I realized that you had gone into a different database than I had.
[09:53:13] Patron: perfect! thank you very much
[09:53:20] Librarian: no problem at all.
[09:53:31] Librarian: If there anything else I can help you with today?
[09:53:39] Patron: no ma'am that was it
[09:53:46] Librarian: Have a wonderful day!
[09:53:56] Patron: you too
[09:54:37] Thank you for using Ask a Librarian.
