[11:33:37] Patron: ok
[11:37:04] Sarah H: I am still looking but I am not finding any that explicity say that there is not enough attention/financing/etc. paid to special education. However, it doesn't mean that the books won't address it.
[11:37:29] Patron: ok
[11:38:19] Sarah H: you might want to check this one out: Special education in contemporary society : an introduction to exceptionality Call number LC3981 .G37 2006

May Teaching Chat
Rachel Mulvihill, University of Central Florida
Rachel worked very effectively with a student from a different college than her own and led the student to the correct database for an education topic. Rachel even suggested keywords that the student could use to search the topic. Good interaction and teaching!
Patron: Can you hrlp me find non opinion journal articles from between 2000-200 on the topic of character ed in schools?
[0:07:44] Rachel M: Hi Emily - I'm Rachel from the University of Central FPatronda libraries.
[0:08:06] Rachel M: Let me take a look at what databases FAU has that might work for this assignment. One moment...
[0:08:07] Patron: hi
[0:08:56] Patron: i need to find 5 non-opinion hournal articles to use in writing a 25 page paper. I'm not so good at data base seaching, i dont really know how to go about this
[0:09:03] Rachel M: I think Education Full Text and/or ERIC databases would work well - they both cover education topics.
[0:09:37] Rachel M: From the library home page, I clicked on ""Indexes/Databases" in the menu on the left. Then I clicked on ""Find Databases by Subject"";
[0:10:02] Rachel M: Under ""Education Databases""; you should see Education Full Text and ERIC listed. You can search here for your topic.
[0:10:28] Rachel M: I would try keyword searches like ""character education&""; and high school (or elementary school, or whatever school/age you're interested in)
[0:10:59] Rachel M: Most databases show your results with the most recent first, so you can make sure you're getting the most recent, or there are also ways to limit your search so you only see results from certain years.
[0:0:19] Patron: they need to be from peer-reviewed journals. how do i tell if they are or not?
[0:0:23] Rachel M: You might also consider related terms like ""moral education""; etc.
[0:0:41] Rachel M: Depending on the database you search, you can often limit to peer-reviewed articles on the search page.
[0:13:17] Rachel M: For example, in Education Full Text, there's a check box on the search screen that says ""Peer Reviewed" and if you check that box, all of your results will be peer-reviewed.
[0:14:17] Patron: ok, thanks- i have to list the article in ""APA 6th edition" can you tell me what that mean?
[0:15:40] Rachel M: APA is a style of citing articles. You can find more info online, but many databases have a feature that will show you how the APA citation should look. For example, in Education Full Text, there's a link that says ""Cite""when you're looking at an article, and it will show you several citation styles, including APA.
[0:16:00] Rachel M: Look for it where you see email, print, save icons on the page that gives detailed information about each article.
[0:16:32] Patron: i know what APA is- ""6th edition" is new to me though. how is that differnet
[0:17:15] Rachel M: Here's a resource from your library about APA. It refers to the 6th edition. The 6th edution was published last year, and is just the latest way to use the APA style.
[0:17:16] The librarian is sending you to http://libguides.fau.edu/content.php?pid=55096&sid=403345.
[0:18:06] Patron: ok, thanks
[0:18:18] Rachel M: You're welcome, anything else I can help with?
[0:19:44] Patron: i think you covered it. thank you!
[0:19:55] Rachel M: No problem, have a good afternoon :-)
