Jan quickly showed a public library patron how to request a book from another branch. Patron was pleased and said “how easy was that? awesome!”

Jenny  acted as a sounding board for a patron who was writing a young adult book that might be used within a school system. Jenny gave the patron useful advice and was able to call on her own knowledge of a similarly focused fiction book for young adults to help guide the patron.

Rob K. directed a student to a specialized database (CINAHL) and others to search for resources on a nursing topic. He also sent the student a link that explained writing an annotated bibliography, which was new to the patron. In addition, Rob K. helped clarify what information can be given in the annotations. Phil worked with a student who was making corrections according to a program that the professor required run for an essay in which misspellings and grammatical errors were highlighted. Phil helped the student with some corrections, but persisted in trying to explain to the student that grammar programs also make errors when the program did not recognize the corrections. Phil went beyond the usual purpose of the AskALibrarian Service.

October 2012 Exemplary Reference Awards

The Quality Assurance Workgroup is happy to award the following transcripts for the October 2012 Exemplary Reference Awards. Transcripts were awarded in three categories: Best Brief Chat, Best Detailed Chat, and Best Teaching Chat.

Brief Exemplary Chat:  Sara Gonzalez, Everglades University

Sara handled a tricky question well. She found a rare, old VHS tape and located the reason why the patron had been frustrated about it — there was a cataloging mix-up on the record in the patron’s library system. She also gave good detailed information about the language versions of these three films, and where they are located in the state. In the end, although no direct solution was possible, Sara handled it well by asking the patron if they wanted to call the library at which the VHS tape might be available. It was a thorough handling of the question, conducted with good customer service.

Lauri was thorough as she patiently inquired as to just what the patron was looking for. She did an excellent job leading the patron to the resources needed. The skill and expertise displayed were perfect examples of an Askalibrarian.
